JASENKA GRUJIć

Dr. sc. Jasenka Grujić is a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics with over five decades of medical experience. She was born in 1951 in Zagreb and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb in 1975. After initial years working in emergency medical services, she began her specialization in gynecology and obstetrics in 1980 and passed her specialist exam in 1985. During her career, she worked at the Clinical Hospital Center Sisters of Charity, where she led the Department of Pathology of Pregnancy and dealt with gynecology for children and adolescents, obstetrics, ultrasound diagnostics, and gynecological surgery. In 1994, she opened a private gynecological practice in Zagreb, where she remains actively engaged.
She earned her master’s degree in 1991 and her doctorate in 1998. Dr. Grujić is the author of numerous professional and scientific papers, as well as the handbook Contraception – A Guide to Reproductive Health, the first Croatian scientific monograph dedicated to contraception.
Dr. Grujić is well known for her public engagement in advocating for women’s reproductive rights and secularism in medicine. She is one of the founders of the initiative to regulate conscientious objection in medicine and strongly opposes its misuse, considering it a refusal to fulfill professional duties. Through her public appearances and professional work, she highlights the dangers that widespread conscientious objection poses to women’s health and rights, especially regarding access to safe and legal abortion. She actively participates in public debates, criticizing the influence of religious institutions on reproductive health policies and advocating that medical decisions be based on scientific evidence rather than religious doctrine. Her expertise and advocacy have been recognized internationally, including her participation in discussions at the European Parliament on women’s reproductive health rights and the challenges faced by countries where conservative ideologies restrict access to healthcare.
At the "Brave Sisters" conference in Split, Dr. Grujić will speak about the challenges and experiences in providing gynecological care in Croatia, with a particular focus on the importance of protecting women’s rights to access safe and legal abortion.
