Dr. Rebecca Gomperts is a Dutch physician, activist, and pioneer of revolutionary approaches in the fight for access to safe abortion. She studied medicine and visual arts in Amsterdam.

After completing her studies, she worked as a doctor aboard the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior, where, during a voyage through South America, she witnessed the suffering of women due to a lack of access to reproductive health services.

This experience inspired her to establish Women on Waves, an organization that provides abortion care on international waters.

In response to the growing number of help requests from countries with restrictive abortion laws, she launched Women on Web in 2005 — an online service for medical abortion that responds to more than 100,000 inquiries from women around the world each year. Rebecca Gomperts earned her Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University in 2011 and completed her PhD at the Karolinska Institutet in 2014.

She has published numerous articles, essays, and the novel Zeedrift. She is the recipient of several international awards for human rights and contributions to women’s health, including the Global Women’s Rights Award and the Allan Rosenfield Award for Lifetime Contributions to International Family Planning.
